The JFK 50 course

The largest and oldest ultramarathon in the United States, and structurally three races in one: a rocky Appalachian Trail section running from about mile 5.5 to mile 15.5, then 26.3 flat miles on the C&O Canal towpath beside the Potomac, then 8.4 miles of rolling country road into Williamsport. The towpath is dead flat and relentlessly repetitive, and it is where the race is actually decided.

Weather on race day

Late November in western Maryland is cold: starts near freezing, highs in the 40s, and wet leaves on the Appalachian Trail section early on. The canal towpath holds cold air and can feel considerably colder than the forecast.

What to train for

Flat, repetitive volume above everything. The towpath asks you to hold one gait for 26 miles with no terrain variation to reset the muscles, which is a specific and trainable stress. Include long, monotonous flat runs, and practise the technical trail descent early in the race so it costs you nothing later.

JFK 50 training questions

How long should I train for the JFK 50?

Most runners give a 50-mile race twenty to twenty-four weeks of focused training on top of a season of consistent aerobic mileage. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

For this one, yes. The instant browser builder stops at the marathon, so an ultra plan comes from the coach itself, which needs a free account. Still no card, and the plan adapts as you log the training.
