Course
The IRONMAN Maryland course
The day starts at sunrise at Gerry Boyle Park with a 2.4-mile, two-loop swim in the brackish, tidal Choptank River; in 2026 the outgoing tide meant a slight current against you on the way out and with you on the way back. The 112-mile bike is two non-technical laps into rural Dorchester County and through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, home to one of the highest concentrations of nesting bald eagles on the Atlantic Coast, with less than 500 feet of total climbing.

The roads are not fully closed but traffic is light, and across the open marsh the wind is the main resistance. The 26.2-mile run is three flat out-and-back laps along the Choptank, through neighborhoods and down brick-paved High Street to a turnaround on Poplar Street in downtown Cambridge. The finish sits on historic Long Wharf with a Chesapeake Bay lighthouse behind it.

- Race-day conditions
- IRONMAN lists typical race-day air temperatures of about 68 °F at dawn to 79 °F, with highs of 74 to 86 °F in 2024–2026 and humid Eastern Shore air. The river averages about 72 °F, but recent swims ran 73–76 °F, right at the 76.1 °F wetsuit cutoff, so train to swim without one. Plan electrolytes for the humidity and expect exposed, sunny stretches on the bike.
What to train for
With under 500 feet of climbing, this bike is pure time in the aerobars, often into a headwind across open marsh.
Build long rides of 4 to 6 hours on flat roads at steady target power, and practice staying low and fueling on schedule when the wind picks up.
The three-lap flat marathon rewards even pacing, so rehearse long runs at goal effort, with a run-walk rhythm if that is your plan. Swim some sessions without a wetsuit and practice sighting in a cross-current.

Taper
Tapering for the IRONMAN Maryland
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 18, 2027, your taper starts around August 31, 2027.
