Course
The IRONMAN Italy course
The single-loop 3.8 km swim starts from the central beach of Cervia and runs along the shoreline in the shallow, usually gentle Adriatic before turning back to shore. The two-loop 180 km bike leaves the seafront promenade, crosses the Salt Pans Nature Park (home to pink flamingos) and heads into the Romagna countryside; it is mostly flat apart from the short climb at Bertinoro, after which the road descends back toward Cervia.

The marathon is four flat laps through Cervia and Milano Marittima: along the port canal, across the square of the historic salt warehouse, through the medieval walls and into Town Hall Square. One seafront transition of almost 500 m serves both T1 and T2.

- Race-day conditions
- IRONMAN lists an average water temperature of 22 °C, and the last three race days measured 23–24 °C, so a wetsuit swim is likely: wetsuits are allowed up to and including 24.5 °C and prohibited above it. Air temperatures usually range from about 15 °C at the start to 21–26 °C in the afternoon, and coastal humidity makes the marathon feel warmer than the number suggests, so plan your sodium and fluids for a warm run.
What to train for
A flat 180 km means hours in the same position, so make aero endurance the backbone: build to rides of 5–6 hours with long blocks at race power while staying tucked.
Practise the short Bertinoro climb with a few 5–8 minute climbs in each long ride, keeping power from spiking.
The four-lap marathon rewards patience: do 60–90 minute brick runs off long rides, and rehearse taking 60–90 g of carbohydrate per hour on the bike.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the IRONMAN Italy
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 18, 2027, your taper starts around August 31, 2027.

Most athletes give a full-distance (140.6) triathlon twenty-four to thirty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base.
