Course
The Henley River Half Marathon course
This Saturday race starts and finishes at Remenham Farm (RG9 3DB), across the Thames from Henley-on-Thames and home of the town's famous rowing regatta. The route mixes tarmac and trail paths, mostly on closed roads, with river views along the Thames and the countryside around Henley.
Read the full course notes
The half marathon is a mini lap plus 2 laps and the 10K is a single lap. The published route files show about 99 m of climbing on the half and 47 m on the 10K: gently undulating rather than hilly, but with enough rises and surface changes to keep you honest. The trail sections are marked with flags and arrows, and there are toilets on course as well as in the event village.

- Rolling

- Half marathon, 10K
- Weather on race day
- Early September in the Thames Valley is usually pleasant for racing: around 12–16 °C at the morning starts, with highs near 19–22 °C on Met Office averages for nearby Benson. Mornings can be misty by the river, and a sunny day warms up quickly on the open trail sections. Start steady, use the water on course, and expect the second lap of the half to feel warmer than the first.
What to train for
The mix of trail and gentle rises rewards runners who can hold rhythm as the ground changes.
Do one run a week on mixed trail and tarmac, and include 6 to 8 x 2 minutes at 10K effort on a gradual incline to build strength without hammering your legs.
Build long runs to 18 to 20 km over similar terrain with the final 5 km at goal pace. Treat the first, shorter lap as a warm-up and aim to run the second big lap a little quicker than the first.

Taper
Tapering for the Henley River Half Marathon
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on September 4, 2027, your taper starts around August 23, 2027.
