    Course

    The Hackney Half course

A 21.1 km loop that starts and finishes at Hackney Marshes, the headline race of the HOKA Hackney Moves weekend. The route runs on closed roads through the heart of the borough: along Mare Street past Hackney Town Hall, round by London Fields and along Victoria Park Road, before heading back to the Marshes along Homerton Road.

The organisers describe it as fast and flat, and the support is relentless, with music points and three fan hubs along the way. Expect a few speed bumps and changes of road surface, typical of East London streets. Six aid stations sit at about 5.6, 9.2, 11.4 (gels), 12.7, 15 and 18.5 km.

    Weather on race day
Mid-May in London is usually mild, around 11–18 °C during the race, and a sunny morning can feel warm for the later waves, which start up to about 10:20. The organisers put sun protection on their race-day checklist for good reason: drink at the early aid stations and start a little conservatively if the sun is out.

    What to train for

A flat, fast half rewards threshold fitness: run a weekly session such as 3 × 3 km or 2 × 5 km at half marathon pace or slightly quicker.

Build long runs to 18–22 km with the last 5 km at goal pace.

Busy urban roads with corners, speed bumps and surface changes mean you will not run a perfect line, so train on city streets and practise settling straight back into rhythm after each turn. If you are in a later wave, do a few long runs in late-morning warmth to learn how your pace responds.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Hackney Half

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 16, 2027, your taper starts around May 4, 2027.

    Hackney Half training questions

How long should I train for the Hackney Half?

Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Is the Hackney Half course hilly?

Flat. A 21.1 km loop that starts and finishes at Hackney Marshes, the headline race of the HOKA Hackney Moves weekend.

What is the weather usually like at the Hackney Half?

Mid-May in London is usually mild, around 11–18 °C during the race, and a sunny morning can feel warm for the later waves, which start up to about 10:20. The organisers put sun protection on their race-day checklist for good reason: drink at the early aid stations and start a little conservatively if the sun is out.

When should I start tapering for the Hackney Half?

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 16, 2027, your taper starts around May 4, 2027.
