    Course

    The Greensboro Half course

The half starts and finishes on Battleground Avenue at the north edge of downtown Greensboro, beside Fisher Park, with the 1-mile fun run at 8:00 a.m., the half at 8:30 and the 5K at 8:40. It is a two-loop, USATF-certified course: from the start you swing through the Fisher Park neighborhood onto Elm Street and North Church Street, out past Yanceyville Street and Textile Drive, then onto the Latham Park Greenway and the leafy streets around Latham Road, Nottingham Road and Fisher Park Circle before heading back to Elm Street for lap two.

The organizers bill it as the fastest half in Greensboro and mostly flat, but expect some short hills and several narrowish greenway bridges, so keep to the right and leave room to pass. Eight aid stations serve water and Tailwind, with gels near mile 6.75, and pacers run from 1:30 to 3:15. The cutoff is 3 hours 15 minutes, with checks at halfway (mile 6.9) and mile 11.75.

    Weather on race day
Late November in Greensboro usually means a crisp start in the 40s °F, with daytime highs around 60 °F and lows near 39 °F. Most years that is ideal racing weather, so dress in layers you can shed, wear gloves you can toss, and expect to run close to your best pace.

    What to train for

Two loops let you split the race in half: run the first loop at relaxed goal pace and treat the second as the race, so practice long runs of 10 to 12 miles with the second half slightly faster.

The short hills and greenway sections reward rhythm changes, so add a weekly session of 6 to 8 x 1 minute uphill at 10K effort and tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles on rolling neighborhood streets.

Practice taking Tailwind or your own drink on the move, since it is offered at almost every station. If you are aiming near the cutoff, rehearse 14:50 per mile on long runs, the sweep pace.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Greensboro Half

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
