Every route is paved trail along the water, with mostly level running and no big climbs mentioned by the organiser. The 5K aid station sits at Nelson Park, and the 10K continues to an aid station at Peace Hall on Ohio Dominican University's East Campus. At the finish you pick a freshly baked cookie, and the race benefits the Alzheimer's Association Central Ohio Chapter.

- Distances
- 5K, 10K
- Weather on race day
- Late February in Columbus usually means a start somewhere between the mid 20s and low 40s °F, with a fair chance of snow, slush or cold rain. Warm up in layers (the heated shelter helps), start in gloves you can tuck away, and expect the first mile to feel sluggish until you warm through; the race goes ahead rain, snow or shine.
What to train for
A mostly level paved trail suits even pacing, so the work is in learning your goal pace and holding it in the cold.
For the 5K, run 5 to 6 x 800 m at goal pace with 2 minutes easy once a week; for the 10K, 4 x 1.5 miles at goal pace with 3 minutes easy.
Keep one easy long run a week, building to 7 to 8 miles for the 10K and 5 for the 5K, and run some sessions outdoors in February conditions so the race-day gear is tested. Add 6 x 20 second strides after two easy runs a week to sharpen your start when all three distances set off together.

Taper
Tapering for the Columbus Cookie Run
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on February 27, 2027, your taper starts around February 18, 2027.
