    Course

    The Circleville Turkey Trot course

The Circleville Turkey Trot is a 5K walk and run on the streets of downtown Circleville, based at St. Philip's Episcopal Church at 129 West Mound Street.

    Read the full course notes

It starts at 9:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, so you are finished and home well before the turkey comes out. The organisers do not publish a detailed route, so expect paved city streets through the downtown and check the registration page for any map closer to race day. It is a small-town charity race: proceeds help Pickaway County food pantries fight food insecurity. The race is chip timed by USA Race Timing.

    Distances
    5K
    Weather on race day
Thanksgiving morning in central Ohio is usually cold at a 9:00 a.m. start, around 30–42 °F, with frost or a light breeze possible. Wear gloves and a light hat, jog for 10 minutes before the start, and expect the first mile to feel stiff until you settle in.

    What to train for

A downtown 5K is short and fast, so train speed and pacing more than distance.

Once a week run 6 to 8 x 400 m or 4 to 5 x half mile at goal 5K pace with equal jog recoveries, and once a week a 15–20 minute tempo at comfortably hard effort.

Practise a controlled start: on a few runs, hold the first mile at goal pace and then build, so the Thanksgiving crowd does not pull you out too fast. If you plan to walk or run-walk, build to 40–45 minutes of continuous movement at least twice a week.
