Course
The Birmingham Running Festival course
The festival is held in Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield (Park Road, B73 6BT), a 2,400-acre National Nature Reserve about 6 miles from Birmingham city centre. Sutton Park is home to the National Road Relays, so you are running on paths raced by Sir Mo Farah and many other British greats.

The race is on road surfaces through the park's heath and woodland, with the half marathon starting at 9:30, the 10K at 10:15 and the 5K at 10:25. Expect plenty of climbing: the published route files show about 306 m of ascent on the half marathon, 144 m on the 10K and 72 m on the 5K. Miles are accurately marked and water stations sit around the course, with the event village close to Sutton Coldfield town centre and station.

- Hilly
- Distances
- Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Early September in the West Midlands is usually comfortable for racing: around 12–16 °C at the morning starts, with highs near 18–19 °C on Met Office averages. The open heathland can be breezy, and a sunny morning warms up quickly on the exposed sections. Run the climbs by effort, drink at the water stations, and save something for the final miles.
What to train for
With roughly 300 m of climbing over the half, this is a strength course, and the famous relay paths reward runners who can keep moving well uphill.
Do a weekly session of 6 to 8 x 3 minutes uphill at half marathon to 10K effort, jogging back down, and make most long runs hilly, building to 18 to 20 km.
Add short downhill strides to practise quick, relaxed turnover so you gain time on the descents. Aim for even effort, not even splits: let the pace drop a little on the climbs and pick it back up on the flat.

Taper
Tapering for the Birmingham Running Festival
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on September 5, 2027, your taper starts around August 24, 2027.
