Course
The Warrington Running Festival course
The Warrington Running Festival starts and finishes at Bank Park on Crosfield Street, beside the town hall gardens, and all three races run on closed roads through Warrington town centre. The half marathon and 10K set off together at 9:00, with the 5K following at 9:15, so the opening kilometres are busy and lively.
Read the full course notes
Warrington sits low in the Mersey valley and the route stays on the town's streets, so expect a largely flat road course where rhythm matters more than climbing (RunThrough has not published an elevation profile). Every kilometre is marked with a distance flag, the half has three water stations and toilets around halfway, and the 10K has one water stop near halfway. There is a 3-hour cut-off on the half because of the road closures.
- Distances
- Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Late September in Warrington usually brings 10–15 °C at the 9:00 start, with daytime highs around 17–18 °C on the nearby Met Office record. Autumn showers and a breeze are common in the north-west, so bring a throwaway layer for the start and plan to drink at all three water stations if the sun comes out.
What to train for
A flat town-centre course rewards even pacing, so make your key session a steady tempo run: 3 x 10 minutes at half marathon pace with 2 minutes easy, building to 2 x 20 minutes.
Practise starting relaxed, because the half and 10K go off together and the first kilometre can pull you along too fast.
Use kilometre markers in training too: run your long runs on a measured loop and check every split. Build the long run to 18–20 km for the half, with the last 5 km at goal pace.
