The start and finish line is on Pier Park Drive just north of Margaritaville, in front of Paradise Found, and the post-race party is at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville at Pier Park. Roads stay open to traffic and runners go with the flow of traffic, though the race notes traffic is usually light at this time of year. The wheelchair race starts at 6:55 a.m., the marathon at 7:00 and the half at 7:30, and everyone must finish by 1:00 p.m., a 6-hour limit for the marathon. The marathon is USATF certified (FL15004LAB) and a Boston qualifier, with water and Powerade at every mile marker.
- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Early December in Panama City Beach usually ranges from lows near 45 °F to highs near 66 °F, so the 7:00 a.m. start is cool and the morning stays comfortable for a fast run. Gulf breezes along the beach road are common, so wear a layer you can toss at the start and be ready for stretches into the wind.
What to train for
With aid every mile and cool December conditions, this is a course for a goal time, so practice steady goal-pace running: build long runs to 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 to 8 at marathon pace.
Add a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort to raise your cruising speed.
The out-and-back on beach roads can mean wind one way, so on breezy days run your goal-pace segments by effort and tuck in behind a group. Practice taking a sip at every mile without breaking stride, since stations come that often.
