    Course

The Lake Norman Turkey Trot course

All three races start and finish at Life Fellowship Church on Chartown Drive in Cornelius, a few minutes from Lake Norman, on Thanksgiving morning. The half marathon goes off at 7:30 a.m., the 10K at 7:35 and the 5K at 7:40, so the whole field is out together early and home in time for the holiday.

The half marathon is two loops, and every course is on asphalt road with no off-road sections. Half marathoners need to finish by 11:15 a.m., a 3.75-hour window that leaves room for walkers and first-timers. 2026 is the race's 20th edition, and strollers are welcome at the back of the 5K.

    Distances
    Half marathon, 10K, 5K
    Weather on race day
Late November in the Charlotte area usually brings lows near 40 °F and highs in the low 60s °F, so expect a chilly start in the 40s °F that warms as you go. Wear a throwaway layer or gloves to the line and drop them once you are warm, and keep your early miles relaxed so you are not overheating by the second loop.

    What to train for

For the half, the two-loop layout means you see the same road twice: use the first lap to settle in and plan to run the second lap at or slightly faster than goal pace.

Build long runs to 10 to 12 miles, finishing the last 2 to 3 at half marathon pace, and add a weekly tempo of 20 to 30 minutes at comfortably hard effort.

10K and 5K runners benefit from intervals such as 5 to 6 x 1 kilometer at 10K pace or 8 x 400 meters at 5K pace. Practice warming up in cold weather so you are ready to run well from the gun.
