    Course

    The Haunted Forest Marathon course

The Haunted Forest Marathon starts in Canal Fulton and is one of the flattest marathons around, with just 57 feet of total elevation and only 5 turns over 26.2 miles. After the first 1.2 miles on the road alongside the half marathoners, the marathon joins the Towpath Trail and heads south to a turnaround at mile 7.75, then runs back north to a second turnaround at mile 20.8 before the finish.

The surface mixes blacktop with hard-packed crushed limestone. Thirteen aid stations offer water and lemon-lime Gatorade. It is a Boston qualifier with a second medal if you qualify on race day, and 18 percent of 2025 marathon finishers did just that.

    Weather on race day
Late October in Stark County is crisp autumn running weather. Climate data for nearby Canton give an October average high of about 63 °F and a low of about 43 °F, with a dew point near 41 °F, which feels dry. October averages about 3.3 inches of rain. Mornings start cool, so wear a throwaway layer to the start, and the 8:00 start means the day warms gently as you run.

    What to train for

A flat, fast course rewards even pacing, so practise marathon-pace segments of 6 to 10 miles inside your long runs.

Do some of your long runs on crushed limestone or packed gravel paths so the towpath surface feels natural underfoot.

Rehearse the two 180-degree turnarounds by slowing smoothly into a turn and accelerating back to pace. With so little climbing, the effort is all about rhythm, so practise drinking from cups at an easy pace and keep fueling every 30 to 45 minutes.

    Taper

Tapering for the Haunted Forest Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
