    Course

    The Carlsbad Marathon course

All three races start and finish at The Shoppes at Carlsbad and pass the Buena Vista Lagoon in the opening miles. The marathon then runs through the crowds of Carlsbad Village, reaches the ocean around mile 3 and follows an out-and-back, two-loop course with more than 18 miles beside the Pacific: south to La Costa Avenue, north to Mountain View Road, south again to Breakwater Road, then north to the finish.

The half marathon heads out to Carlsbad Boulevard (Highway 101) and turns at Breakwater Road, giving almost 8 miles of open ocean views. The organizers describe both courses as gently rolling: the published profiles stay between sea level and about 75 feet, with repeated short climbs off the beach sections that add up to roughly 775 feet of gain for the marathon and 394 feet for the half. The full starts at 6:15 a.m., the 5K at 6:40 and the half at 7:45.

    Weather on race day
Mid-January on the Carlsbad coast usually means 45–55 °F at the start and highs in the low to mid 60s, often under a marine layer that burns off by late morning. Rain is possible in a wet winter and a light onshore breeze is common. Half marathoners starting at 7:45 should expect more sun in the final miles, so plan fluids accordingly.

    What to train for

Carlsbad is fast but never quite flat: the course rises 40 to 60 feet off the beach again and again.

Add rolling long runs and a weekly set of 8 to 10 x 45 seconds uphill so those short climbs feel routine late in the race.

Because the marathon passes near the start area and turns back south for a second loop, finish your long runs with 3 to 4 miles at goal pace to practice staying strong after the turn. For the 6:15 start, rehearse an early breakfast and warm-up a few times before race day.
