Course
The Burn Your Half Off course
Burn Your Half Off is the summer sister of Freeze Your Half Off, run on the same concrete Tennessee Riverwalk from the Hubert Fry Center on Amnicola Highway, with a 7:30 a.m. start for the half, 10K and 5K. The organizers describe the course as mostly flat with one hill, and it is a multi-loop out-and-back: west to a dead end at the river (about 2.5 miles round trip), back through the start area, then east to the Chickamauga Dam and back.

About half the route follows the Tennessee River, and restrooms are never more than a mile away. One large aid station in the middle of the course is passed many times, with unlimited ice, smoothies, salt tablets and sunscreen on hand, and drop bags are allowed. The time limit is a generous 8 hours, so walkers are welcome too.

- Weather on race day
- Chattanooga in early July is hot and humid: WeatherSpark lists average highs of 88 to 89 °F and lows near 70 °F, and roughly three days in four feel muggy. The 7:30 a.m. start avoids the worst of the heat, but expect temperatures to rise quickly through the morning. Summer storms are common, with about a 43% chance of a wet day, so arrive hydrated, wear light colors and use sunscreen.
What to train for
Heat is the real challenge in July, so build heat tolerance gradually over two to three weeks with easy runs at warmer times of day, and practice drinking on a schedule.
Include a weekly tempo run of 3 to 5 miles at goal pace, and accept that goal pace may be slower on a hot morning.
The single hill comes up on repeated loops, so add a few short hill repeats to stay strong on it. Test your electrolyte and salt plan on long runs and use the ice at the aid station to keep cool.

Taper
Tapering for the Burn Your Half Off
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on July 10, 2027, your taper starts around June 28, 2027.
