    Course

    The Buckeye Trail 50K course

The Buckeye Trail 50K is the oldest trail 50K in Ohio and one of the state's first ultras: Joe Jurczyk started it in 1994 as an informal birthday run, and 13 runners finished that first year. It runs point to point on the Buckeye Trail through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the original course went out and back between Oak Grove and Pine Lane.

The 2027 race is Sunday, June 27, with the 50K starting at 7:00 am and a 10-hour cutoff, and a companion 25K running point to point from Pine Lane to Oak Grove on the same trails with a 6-hour cutoff. Western Reserve Racing organizes the event, which is part of the Ohio Endurance Series.

    Distances
    50K, 25K
    Weather on race day
Ten years of late June weather data for Brecksville show average highs near 81 °F and lows near 63 °F, with about 68 °F at 8 am and humidity above 80 percent in the morning. Rain falls on roughly four or five days in ten in this window, so the trail can be muddy and the air heavy. Start early in your effort plan, drink and take electrolytes regularly, and slow down on the exposed sections in the afternoon heat.

    What to train for

Train on trail as often as you can, ideally in the Cuyahoga Valley, so your feet learn the roots, stairs and short climbs of Ohio single track.

Build long runs gradually to 18 to 22 miles for the 50K (or 10 to 12 miles for the 25K), and include power hiking on steeper sections.

Practise fueling every 30 to 45 minutes and carrying fluids, since summer trail running burns through water. The 10-hour cutoff is generous, so focus on steady effort rather than speed.
