    Course

The Belfast City Half Marathon course

The race starts and finishes on Ormeau Embankment and takes in the south, east, north and west of Belfast. It is the biggest half marathon in Northern Ireland and sells out year on year, so expect a busy start and plenty of company all the way round.

The organisers publish participant instructions before race day, so check them for the latest route details. The time limit is three hours, there are pacers on course, and a tail vehicle picks up runners who cannot keep the required pace. Walking is not permitted: the organisers describe it as a competitive event to be completed in under three hours.

Northern Ireland's biggest half marathon, selling out year on year
    Weather on race day
Mid-September in Belfast is usually mild, around 10–17 °C, often with a breeze and a good chance of a shower. Those are good conditions for a fast half: dress light, wear a throwaway layer at the start, and keep drinking even when it feels cool.

    What to train for

With a three-hour limit and walking not permitted, the core job is to run the whole distance at an even effort.

Run weekly tempo sessions of 25 to 40 minutes at half marathon effort, and finish long runs of 16 to 20 km with 3 km at goal pace.

If you plan to follow a pacer, practise holding a fixed target pace in group runs so the crowded early kilometres feel relaxed. Build your long runs until you can run continuously for longer than your goal time.
