Course
The Athens Ohio Marathon course
Both races start at 8:00 a.m. at South College and East Union streets in uptown Athens, next to the Ohio University College Green. After a short loop through town via Union, Smith, Byard, Shafer and West State streets, runners join the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway at about mile 1.5 and head northwest up the Hocking River valley toward Nelsonville.

The half turns around near bikeway mile post 9 (about mile 6.7) and the marathon continues to bikeway mile post 15.5 (about mile 13.3) before both return the same way. Both courses are USATF certified, described by the organizers as fast and flat, dropping from a 750 ft high point at the start to 640 ft, and finishing on the track at Pruitt Field. The marathon is a Boston qualifier, and the race has been held every year since 1968.

- Flat
- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon
- Weather on race day
- April in Athens averages a high of 65 °F and a low of 40 °F, so the 8:00 a.m. start is usually cool and comfortable for fast running. Spring showers are common, with about 3.8 inches of rain across the month, so pack a light layer or a throwaway shirt for the start. The bikeway follows the river valley, and a breeze can shift between the outbound and return legs. Dress for the second half warming up, and enjoy ideal spring racing weather.
What to train for
A flat out-and-back on a bike path rewards even pacing, so practice long runs at a steady effort and marathon pace segments of 6 to 12 miles in the final two months.
Aid stations serve water and Gatorade, with bananas and oranges on the second half, and no gels on course, so train with the gels you will carry yourself.
The marathon has a six hour time limit, giving every runner room to finish. Since the course avoids the Athens foothills, you can focus on rhythm and fueling rather than climbing, and a few tempo runs on a flat trail will feel just like race day.

Taper
Tapering for the Athens Ohio Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 11, 2027, your taper starts around March 24, 2027.
