Turkey trot training
Free Turkey Trot Training Plan (4 Weeks to Thanksgiving)
Thanksgiving is close, and four weeks is enough. Most turkey trots are a 5K, some add a 10K or a half, and the plan works the same way for all of them. Easy running most days, one session with a little pace in it, and fresh legs on the morning.
- First-timers
- 4 weeks of run-walk, 3 days a week
- Already running
- 3 to 4 runs a week, one with pace
- Usual distance
- 5K (3.1 miles), often with a 10K or half too
- Taper
- 3 or 4 easy days before the race
Four weeks from the couch, run-walk to the start line
If you are starting from zero, run for 1 minute and walk for 2, repeated for 20 to 25 minutes, three days a week. In week 2 run 2 minutes and walk 2. In week 3 run 3 and walk 1. Week 4 is shorter, so you reach Thanksgiving rested. Walking during a turkey trot is completely normal, and a good part of the field does it. If a week felt hard, repeat it and walk more on the day.
Already running, one session of pace and the rest easy
Four weeks will not build a new engine, but it will sharpen the one you have. Run three or four days and make one of them faster. A simple progression is 6 × 400 m at 5K effort in week 1, 5 × 600 m in week 2 and 4 × 800 m in week 3, each with 2 minutes of easy jogging between and an easy warm-up and cool-down. In week 4 run 3 × 400 m and nothing harder.
How the four weeks fit together
Weeks 1 and 2 build a little, adding around 10 percent of running time at most. Week 3 is the biggest week. Week 4 drops by about a third and ends with two or three very easy days. Fitness from a hard session takes longer than a few days to arrive, so nothing you do in Thanksgiving week will make you faster, but plenty can make you tired.
If yours is a 10K or a half
For a 10K, the same four weeks work if you can already run about 30 minutes. Let the long run grow to 60 or 70 minutes by week 3. For a half, four weeks is short unless you already run 6 to 8 miles comfortably. If you do, build the long run to 9 or 10 miles by week 3. If you do not, a run-walk finish is a perfectly good goal, or pick the shorter distance this year.
Thanksgiving morning
It is often cold at the start, so dress for about 15 °F (8 °C) warmer than the forecast and wear an old layer you can take off. Arrive 45 minutes early, because parking and packet pickup fill up fast. Start toward the back if you are walking or running with kids. The first mile is crowded, so let it be slow, and use the second half to pick people off. Eat the breakfast you already know, and save the big meal for later.
On Friday, keep the habit
Four weeks of running is worth keeping. Take an easy day or two, then choose what comes next, a spring 10K, a first half, or simply three runs a week through winter. Your coach carries your fitness forward into the next plan, so you do not start from zero again in January.

The mistake that costs you the morning
Cramming in the final week. A hard workout on the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving leaves you flat on Thursday and is the most common way to get hurt. The other classic is the first mile, when excitement and a crowded start send you out far too fast. Keep the last days easy and run the first mile slower than feels necessary.
Common questions
Can I do a turkey trot with no training?
Yes, if you are happy to walk some or all of it. A 5K takes most people about 45 to 60 minutes at a brisk walk, and turkey trots are among the most welcoming races there are. Four weeks of run-walk simply makes it more fun.
How long should I train for a turkey trot?
Four weeks is enough for a first-timer aiming to finish with run-walk, and for a regular runner who wants to sharpen up. Eight weeks is more comfortable if you want to run the whole way for the first time.
How far is a turkey trot?
Most are 5K, which is 3.1 miles. Many also offer a one-mile fun run or a 10K, and some have a half marathon. Check your race's page, since the plan changes with the distance.
Can the plan be built for my own turkey trot?
Yes. Pick your race or enter its date and distance, and the coach builds every week from today to Thanksgiving morning around the days you have. If a week goes sideways, it adjusts the next one.
Is Athlete Space free for turkey trot training?
Yes. Adaptive plans, the AI coach, race predictions, and analytics are all free with no credit card, and your plan regenerates from what you actually ran and how you actually recovered.
