Read the full course notes
The whole race stays on the paved T.J. Evans Trail as a simple out-and-back: the 5K, 10K and half marathon each turn at their own point and run straight back to the start. The trail follows an old railroad bed, so the grades are gentle and there are no real hills to plan around. Water stations sit at the turnarounds, which gives the 5K one stop, the 10K three and the half five. The half, 10K and 5K all start together at 9:15 a.m. after the 9:00 a.m. Kids Fun Run, and the course closes at 12:45 p.m. (3.5 hours).

- Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- The Saturday before Thanksgiving in central Ohio is usually cold at a 9:15 a.m. start, around 32–45 °F, often grey with a breeze along the open trail and the odd shower or flurry. Dress for 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the thermometer, bring gloves and a layer to shed, and the race goes ahead rain, snow or shine.
What to train for
A flat, paved out-and-back rewards even pacing, so make tempo runs the backbone: 20 to 30 minutes at half-marathon effort on a flat path, once a week.
Half marathoners should build long runs to 10 to 12 miles with the last 2 to 3 at goal pace, and practice a quick 180-degree turn so the turnaround costs you seconds, not momentum.
Water comes only at the turnarounds (every 1.6 miles or more), so carry a small bottle or gel on long runs and get used to drinking on a schedule. Run a few sessions in cold morning air to dial in your layers before race day.

Taper
Tapering for the Johnstown Turkey Trot
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
