Course
The Lancaster Turkey Day course
The race starts and finishes at Forest Rose School and follows the traditional Lancaster Turkey Day route. Runners head south on the Lancaster Bike Path past the Ohio University-Lancaster and Lancaster High School campuses, run through the covered bridge, then take the E Fair Ave sidewalk east and loop behind Fulton Field and the tennis courts before turning north on the bike path again.

Most of it is gently rolling path, but the sting is in the tail: after the finish comes into view at the greenhouse curve, you cross the pedestrian bridge and climb up to the Fairfield County Agricultural Building before a nice downhill finish. The 10K runs the 5K loop twice, so 10K runners meet that late climb twice. The 5K and 10K start together at 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning and the course closes at 10:30 a.m. (2 hours).

- Weather on race day
- Thanksgiving morning in Lancaster is usually cold at the 8:30 a.m. start, around 30–42 °F, with frost possible and a raw breeze on the open stretches. Wear gloves and a light hat, warm up well before the gun, and save some energy for the final climb.
What to train for
The finish is the race: a short climb to the Agricultural Building right after you first see the line, then a downhill to finish.
Practice it with 6 to 8 x 45 to 60 seconds uphill at 5K effort, jogging back down, once a week, and end a few easy runs with a hard final quarter mile that includes a rise.
10K runners should rehearse running loop two at the same effort as loop one, for example 2 x 3 miles with a short break, the second faster. Keep one day of 400 m or 800 m repeats at 5K pace to sharpen speed for a short, fast race.
