Course
The Mansfield & Lexington Turkey Trot course
Every race starts and finishes on the same line on the historic B&O Railway Trail behind Heartland Church on Lexington Springmill Road. The Richland B&O Trail is a paved, 18.4-mile path on the old Baltimore & Ohio rail line linking Butler, Bellville, Lexington and Mansfield, through open countryside and over river crossings, so the grades are the gentle ones a railroad was built on.

The courses use turnarounds on the trail, with water at each one: one stop for the 5K, three for the 10K and five for the half marathon. The half, 10K and 5K start together at 9:15 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, after the Kids Fun Run at 9:00 a.m. The course closes at 12:45 p.m. (3.5 hours), about 16:01 per mile for the half, and late starters still get an accurate chip time.

- Flat
- Distances
- 5K, 10K, Half marathon
- Weather on race day
- Thanksgiving morning in the Mansfield area is usually cold at the 9:15 a.m. start, around 28–40 °F, and a little late-November snow or a raw wind across the open countryside is possible. Dress in layers with gloves and a hat, warm up close to the start, and ease into the first mile until your legs loosen up.
What to train for
A paved rail trail with gentle grades suits steady rhythm, so the race rewards even pacing and tidy turnarounds rather than hill strength.
Practise the turnaround on a few runs: do out-and-back intervals such as 6 x 3 minutes at 10K effort, turning at halfway, and get back to pace within a few strides of each turn.
Half marathoners should build the long run to 10–12 miles on a flat path and run the second half slightly faster than the first, which is how a course with turnarounds rewards patience. Keep one weekly session of 400 m or half-mile repeats at 5K pace for the 5K and 10K.
