The Wilmington Historic Half course

The half marathon and 10K take in three bridges, including the Isabel Holmes Bridge and the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, and those ramps are the main climbs of the day, while the 5K loops back to Riverfront Park. The 5K starts at 7:00 a.m., the 10K at 7:30 and the half at 7:45, and the 16.2-mile Challenge runs the 5K and then the half, as long as you finish the 5K within 45 minutes. The half has a 3.5-hour limit, pacers from 1:35 to 3:45, and six water stations, four of them with Gatorade.
- Distances
- Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Early December in Wilmington usually ranges from lows near 39 °F to highs near 60 °F, so expect a cool start in the 40s °F and comfortable running as the morning warms. Rain is common enough to plan for, and the bridges can be breezy over the river, so bring a light layer you can shed.
What to train for
The bridge ramps are the hills here: once a week, run 6 to 8 x 60 to 90 seconds uphill at half marathon to 10K effort, then practice relaxing and lengthening your stride on the descent.
Build half marathon long runs to 10 to 12 miles with the last 2 to 3 at goal pace, and run them on routes with a few short climbs.
Challenge runners should practice doubling up, for example a 3-mile tempo, a 15-minute break and then a long run, so the half after the 5K feels familiar. Take the first bridge easy so you have energy for the later ones.
