Course
The Tucson Marathon course
The marathon, 50K and relay start at 7:15 a.m. at Biosphere 2 near Oracle, at about 3,970 feet, and finish at Pima Community College's Northwest Campus on Shannon Road in Tucson. The first 2 miles roll, with a gentle climb to the Biosphere gates, before the course turns onto Highway 77 at mile 2.8 and starts a long, steady descent past Catalina and through Oro Valley in view of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

At mile 18 it moves onto the Cañada del Oro River Park path for the run to the finish. The full marathon has only about 292 feet of climbing against a net drop of 1,493 feet, and it is a USATF certified Boston qualifier; the half starts in Catalina and drops 817 feet with just 41 feet of gain. The 50K adds a loop on The Loop path after mile 24.5, and every event has a 7.5-hour limit.

- Weather on race day
- Mid-December mornings in the high desert are usually cold and dry, around 35–45 °F at the Biosphere 2 start, warming into the 50s and low 60s °F by the finish under mostly clear skies. Low humidity means you lose fluid without noticing, so drink to a plan and wear a throwaway layer and gloves you can shed by mile 3.
What to train for
A net downhill course rewards strong quads: from 8 weeks out, add 6 to 10 x 2 to 3 minutes of downhill running at goal pace on a gentle grade, and run part of your long runs on a sustained descent so your legs learn to absorb it.
Hold back in the first 3 miles, which roll and climb before the drop begins, then let gravity help without overstriding.
Build to long runs of 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 at goal pace, finishing on flat ground to mirror the bike path miles from 18 to the finish. Practice fueling in dry air, with a gel every 30 to 40 minutes and drinks at the frequent aid stations.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Tucson Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on December 13, 2026, your taper starts around November 25, 2026.
