    Course

The Towpath Trail Half Marathon course

The Toledo Roadrunners Club and Metroparks Toledo stage this race at Providence Metropark in Grand Rapids, starting and finishing near the Providence dam and shelter on South River Road. Both the half marathon (8:15 a.m.) and the 10K (8:30 a.m.) are out-and-back routes on the historic canal towpath along the Maumee River, with views of the river, the historic canal locks and the grain mill.

The course is flat and open with good footing on crushed gravel and dirt, and there is plenty of shade. The field is capped at 175 runners and the 2025 race sold out 10 weeks ahead, so plan to register early. Half marathoners should be able to finish within three hours, and walkers are warmly welcome in the 10K.

    Weather on race day
July in the Toledo area averages highs around 84 °F and lows near 64 °F, with humidity around 71%, so the 8:15 a.m. start is usually warm and can be humid. July sees about 3.5 inches of rain over roughly 8 days, so a passing shower is possible. The shade along the towpath helps a lot on a sunny morning. Start relaxed, drink at every chance and save your push for the return toward the Providence dam.

    What to train for

This is a friendly first trail half: flat, shaded and on firm crushed gravel, so you can train mostly on roads and add one weekly run on a gravel path or rail trail to get used to the surface.

Build your long run to 10 to 12 miles, and practice holding a relaxed, even effort, since an out-and-back lets you run the second half a little stronger than the first.

A weekly tempo of 3 to 5 miles will make your goal pace feel smooth. Because the race is in mid-July, schedule long runs early in the morning and practice drinking on the move.

    Taper

Tapering for the Towpath Trail Half Marathon

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
