Course
The Sugarloaf Marathon course
The Sugarloaf Marathon & 15K runs through Carrabassett Valley in the mountains of western Maine, and the organizers describe it as one of the fastest courses in the Northeast. Despite the mountain setting, the marathon is primarily downhill and ends with a gradual 16-mile descent through the valley, which is why so many runners chase personal bests here.

The course is USATF certified and an official Boston Marathon qualifier. It is also Maine's oldest continuously run marathon, with the 2026 race marking its 42nd edition, and the field is capped at 1,500 runners.

- Weather on race day
- Mid-May in the Kingfield and Carrabassett Valley area is cool, with average May highs around 63 °F and lows near 40 °F, so the morning start can feel chilly. That makes for good marathon conditions, but bring a throwaway layer and gloves you can shed once you warm up. The 2026 race was partly sunny and breezy, and May brings about 3.8 inches of precipitation on average, so be ready for a damp or windy day as well.
What to train for
A long, gradual descent rewards quads that are ready for it, so add downhill running to your build: easy downhill strides, rolling long runs and a few progression runs that finish on a gentle grade.
Practice holding goal marathon pace on descents without overstriding, since the final 16 miles invite you to run too fast too early.
Strength work for the quads and calves (lunges, step-downs, calf raises) twice a week helps the legs absorb the pounding. Long runs of 18 to 20 miles that include some downhill will prepare you to finish strong.

Taper
Tapering for the Sugarloaf Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on May 16, 2027, your taper starts around April 28, 2027.
