    Course

    The Noosa Tri course

Billed by its organisers as the biggest Olympic-distance triathlon in the world, Noosa starts at 6:15 am with rolling wave starts off Noosa Main Beach. The 1,500 m swim is an anti-clockwise rectangle in the clear water of Laguna Bay, with the first turn buoy at 610 m and three left turns before heading back to shore.

Transition sits on the grass of Noosa Lions Park, and the 40 km bike is an out-and-back into the Noosa hinterland featuring the 2 km Garmin Hill Climb about 10 km into the ride. The 10 km run is fast and flat along Noosa Parade, with five aid stations and crowds most of the way to the famous blue-carpet finish.

    Race-day conditions
Early November in Noosa is usually warm and humid, with air around 20–24 °C at the early starts and climbing toward 27 °C as later waves run. Laguna Bay is warm at this time of year and Noosa has a long history of non-wetsuit swims, with officials making the call close to race day, so train to swim without one. Plan your hydration for a hot, sunny run, especially if your wave starts late.

    What to train for

The 2 km Garmin Hill Climb comes early in the ride, so practise a hard but steady 5–8 minute climb and then settling straight back into race effort on the flat.

Do your swim sessions without a wetsuit in the final weeks, with open-water practice on sighting and tight left-hand turns.

Weekly bricks (for example a 30–40 km ride followed by 3–5 km at 10K effort) prepare you for a flat run that rewards holding pace in the heat. Heat acclimation in the last two to three weeks pays off on race day.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Noosa Tri

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.

    Noosa Tri training questions

How long should I train for the Noosa Tri?

Most athletes give a Olympic-distance triathlon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

What is the Noosa Tri course like?

Rolling. Billed by its organisers as the biggest Olympic-distance triathlon in the world, Noosa starts at 6:15 am with rolling wave starts off Noosa Main Beach.

How cold is the water at the Noosa Tri?

Early November in Noosa is usually warm and humid, with air around 20–24 °C at the early starts and climbing toward 27 °C as later waves run. Laguna Bay is warm at this time of year and Noosa has a long history of non-wetsuit swims, with officials making the call close to race day, so train to swim without one. Plan your hydration for a hot, sunny run, especially if your wave starts late.

When should I start tapering for the Noosa Tri?

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
