    Course

    The Towpath Twilight course

The Towpath Twilight is an evening race on the Towpath Trail in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood, starting at Sokolowski's Overlook. In 2026, 10 mile walkers set off at 6:30 p.m., 10 mile runners at 7:00, the 10K at 7:05 and the 5K at 7:10.

The 10 mile and 10K head south over the Literary Avenue Bridge and past the Towpath Mounds, Clark Field and Steelyard Commons, and the 10 mile continues past Jennings Road and Harvard Avenue, crosses a pedestrian bridge over the Cuyahoga River and turns around about a mile past the Metroparks trailhead. Both longer races finish at Camp Cleveland on West 7th Street and include a railroad crossing, where any time lost to a passing train can be adjusted. The trail is 8 to 10 feet wide with runners in both directions, and the Twilight is the June leg of the Towpath Trilogy, between the Towpath Half in April and the Towpath Marathon in October.

    Distances
    5K, 10K, 10 miles
    Weather on race day
Mid-June in Cleveland is warm, with average daytime highs around 77 °F and lows in the low 60s °F. By the 7:00 p.m. start the heat of the day is easing, and sunset comes around 9:00 p.m., so most runners finish in daylight. Muggy days run about one in four, and there is roughly a 36% chance of a wet day, so hydrate well through the afternoon before you race.

    What to train for

On an out-and-back with runners coming the other way on a narrow trail, practice holding your line and passing politely.

Evening racing has its own rhythm, so do a few key workouts around 7:00 p.m. and plan a light, early dinner.

For the 10 miler, build long runs to 10 or 11 miles and add tempo segments of 4 to 5 miles near goal pace. Use the turnaround as a checkpoint: if you feel good there, start pressing on the way back to Camp Cleveland.
