Course
The Candy Cane Course course
The Candy Cane Course starts and finishes at the Cummins Shelter in Rentschler Forest MetroPark, a 125-acre park in Fairfield Township just outside Hamilton, north of Cincinnati. The park sits on the Great Miami River and has 13.8 miles of paved and primitive trails, woods, Kennedy Creek and remnants of the historic Miami-Erie Canal.

The 5K, 10K and 15K each have their own course map on the race page, and the organiser notes routes can change for permit or volunteer reasons, so check the latest map for the surface and layout of your distance. All distances start together at 9:00 a.m. after the 8:55 a.m. Kids Dash, with a festive, costume-friendly atmosphere and treats at the finish. If ice makes the course unsafe, the race moves to a virtual event rather than being rescheduled.
- Distances
- 15K, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Mid-December in the Hamilton and Cincinnati area is usually cold at a 9:00 a.m. start, around 28–40 °F, often cloudy, with rain, a dusting of snow or icy patches possible. Wear gloves and a hat, choose shoes with grip in case the paths are wet or frosty, and start a little conservatively until your body warms up.
What to train for
The 15K is the headline distance and rewards strength over speed: build long runs to 10 to 11 miles and include one weekly run of 4 to 6 miles at steady 15K effort.
Since some park paths may be unpaved, do part of your easy mileage on trails or gravel so your ankles and stride are ready for softer, uneven footing.
Add a weekly session of 5 to 6 x 1 kilometre at 10K pace with short recoveries to lift your cruising speed. With a December race, practice running in cold, dark early mornings so race-day layers and warm-ups feel routine.
