    Course

    The Topo Trail Marathon course

The Topo Trail Marathon runs on the mountain bike trails of East Fork State Park, on a 6.55 mile loop that is 100% singletrack. The quarter is one lap, the half is two and the full marathon is four, with starts at 9:30, 9:15 and 9:00 a.m.

Water stops sit at miles 2, 4.5 and 6.55, and the start/finish stop is fully stocked with water, Hammer products, bananas and salty snacks. No lap can be started after 3:00 p.m., and packet pickup runs from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. with no race-day registration. Every finisher takes home a medal and a pint glass.

    Distances
    11K, Half marathon, Marathon
    Weather on race day
Early December in the Cincinnati area is cold and often gray, with average highs near 49 °F and lows around 33 °F at the start of the month. There is roughly a one in four chance of a wet day, so the singletrack can be muddy or slick. Dress in layers you can shed at the start/finish between laps, and bring gloves and a hat for the morning start. Sunset comes around 5:15 p.m., well after the 3:00 p.m. lap cutoff.

    What to train for

Because every mile is singletrack, practice on narrow trail so quick footwork and steady effort feel natural.

A loop course lets you plan fueling by lap: rehearse taking a gel or snack every 30 to 45 minutes and topping up at the fully stocked start/finish stop.

Build long trail runs toward 18 to 20 miles for the full, or 10 to 12 for the half, ideally on similar mountain bike trails. Run by effort rather than pace, since trail miles are slower than road miles, and save a little for your last lap.
